Vol. 388 No. 5

Written Answers. - Unleaded Petrol.

83.

asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport if, following the exhortations of the Minister for the Environment in respect of the use of unleaded petrol, he has corresponded with all the semi-State bodies under his aegis directing them to use unleaded petrol in all of the petrol driven vehicles which are under the control, ownership or leasing of those semi-State companies; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The attention of the State-sponsored Bodies under the aegis of my Department has been drawn to the desirability of running their motor vehicle fleets on lead-free petrol in the interests of the environment. I have been informed by these bodies that the vast majority of the vehicles in question are run on diesel fuel, which is unleaded, that the conversion of existing petrol-driven vehicles will be undertaken, where practicable, and that the need to use unleaded petrol will be taken into account in their vehicle replacement programmes.
