asked the Taoiseach the value of (a) imports and (b) exports to and from the Soviet Union in 1987 and 1988; and the projections for 1989.

The imports from the Soviet Union were valued at £33 million and £34 million in 1987 and 1988 respectively. Exports to the Soviet Union amounted to £21 million in 1987 and £16 million in 1988.

In the period January to February 1989, the latest for which figures are available, imports from the Soviet Union at £4.5 million were £0.5 million down on the corresponding 1988 period. Exports also amounted to £4.4 million which is £1.9 million above the January to February 1988 figure.

asked the Taoiseach the value of (a) imports and (b) exports to and from the United States in 1987 and 1988.

The imports from the United States of America were valued at £1,555 million and £1,623 million in 1987 and 1988 respectively. Exports to the United States of America amounted to £834 million in 1987 and £950 million in 1988.
