asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the action he has taken in the case of an Irish priest who was expelled from Taiwan.

The priest referred to by the Deputy was deported from Taiwan on 17 March 1989. The authorities in Taiwan reportedly considered that his activities were inconsistent with the conditions of his visa. While Ireland does not recognise Taiwan and consequently has no diplomatic relations with the authorities there, I am taking steps through other channels to make the Taiwanese authorities aware of the concern voiced in Ireland on the circumstances of the deportation.
