Vol. 388 No. 8

Written Answers. - Conditions of Irish Prisoners in Britain.

51.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he has received complaints about the conditions under which three Irish female category "A" prisoners are being held in Durham jail in Great Britain; and the action which he has taken in the matter.

I am aware that conditions in the category "A" female H-wing of Durham Jail have been the subject of considerable criticism. The British Home Office approved an investigatory visit last month by a team of experts, commissioned by several independent groups, to assess conditions in the wing. The team's report is awaited.

The Home Office Minister in charge of prisons has also visited the jail recently, and I understand that steps are being taken to improve conditions there.

The London Embassy is monitoring the situation and will continue to visit Irish prisoners in the jail.
