asked the Minister for Education the reason students who sat group certificate and intermediate certificate examinations in the years (i) 1986, (ii) 1987 and (iii) 1988 have got the results of these examinations but have not yet received certificates; and the reason for the delay in this regard.

All the certificates in respect of 1986 have been issued, group certificates in respect of 1987 have also been issued. Priority is being given to preparations for the running of the 1989 examinations. Work on the preparation of the 1988 leaving certificates is being done. Work on the preparation of the outstanding certificates will be carried out as soon as possible after that. The backlog in the issuing of certificates which has built up in recent years will be eliminated under computerisation of the examination system which it is planned to introduce this year.
