Vol. 389 No. 7

Written Answers. - Bishopstown (Cork) Garda Patrols.

77.

asked the Minister for Justice, in view of the alarming increase in vandalism and burglaries in the Bishopstown area of Cork and surrounding districts, if he will make an additional patrol car available to the gardaí in the area which would help them to deal with the situation.

The Garda authorities inform me that measures taken by them to deal with a spate of burglaries and incidents of malicious damage in the Bishopstown Garda subdistrict earlier this year, resulted in a number of youths receiving prison sentences. The authorities consider that there is now an improvement in the local crime rate but they will continue to monitor the situation closely.

The Garda authorities have no proposals at present to allocate a second patrol car to Bishopstown station. In addition to patrols carried out by the existing car assigned there, the Bishopstown area also receives attention, as and when required, from mobile units operating from the district headquarters at Togher and from the divisional headquarters at Union Quay.
