asked the Minister for Energy whether he has granted any mining leases in south west County Mayo; their terms; the dates on which they were granted; the names of the lessee; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

asked the Minister for Energy the number of mining exploration licences which have been granted in south-west County Mayo; their terms; the dates on which they were granted; and the names of the licencees.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 155 and 156 together.

There are no State mining leases in place in the south-west Mayo area at present.

The above licences were issued for an initial term of two years subject to payment of the appropriate fee, and to the conditions generally applicable to the grant of prospecting licences. They were subsequently renewed for further periods, my Department being satisfied that satisfactory prospecting work had been carried out and that acceptable future work programmes would be undertaken.

Prospecting licences do not authorise the holder to engage in mining operations; a separate mining facility is necessary for that purpose.
