Vol. 391 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Written Answers. - Gun Licence.

35.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will reconsider the request of a person (details supplied) in Dublin 11 who has no criminal record, for a gun licence.

Under the Firearms Acts, 1925 to 1971, the power to grant or refuse to grant a firearm certificate is vested in the local superintendent of the Garda district where the applicant resides. Before granting a certificate a superintendent must be satisfied that certain prescribed conditions are fulfilled. The superintendent in this case was not prepared to grant a certificate to the person in question and I am satisfied that his decision was taken in the bona fide exercise of his statutory discretion.
