Vol. 391 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Written Answers. - Pupil-Teacher Ratio.

65.

asked the Minister for Education if she is satisfied with the pupil/teacher ratio in the primary schools (details supplied) in Clondalkin, Dublin 22; if she is prepared to authorise the appointment of further teachers to provide a more acceptable pupil-teacher ratio; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I am satisfied that the 18 national schools in Clondalkin are staffed in accordance with the agreement on the staffing of national schools which was reached between the Government and the INTO under the Programme for National Recovery. This includes, where appropriate, additional provisional appointments from 1 September 1989 in those schools which may be classed as developing schools.

The average class size in each school is obtained by dividing the number of pupils by the number of class teachers, i.e. excluding walking principals, remedials, etc. The average class size in these schools in 1988/89 ranged from 30 to 36.8.

PTR and average class size for 1989/90 cannot be calculated until the actual enrolments in September 1989 are known.
