The Commissioners of Public Works accept that there is a need for a survey of extant vernacular architecture to be carried out with a view to devising a preservation policy. They arranged for a survey of thatched houses in Counties Dublin, Wicklow, Kildare and in part of County Wexford to be conducted in 1987 and 1988 as a pilot project. Following this they commissioned a report by a folklife expert. The report was received recently and is at present being considered.
