Vol. 391 No. 7

Written Answers. - Appointment of Teachers.

75.

asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the proposal by Kildare Vocational Education Committee to appoint teachers to the Confey Community College in a way which is not in accordance with the so-called model system for the appointment of teachers to such colleges; to the anxiety expressed by the parents in this matter; if she will ensure that in the filling of teaching posts in Confey College in the future such posts will be filled by way of public advertisement and that the relevant interviews will be undertaken as is normal in such cases by the interview board of Confey College; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The appointment of teaching staff to a vocational education committee is a matter in the first instance for the chief executive officer and the VEC concerned. The procedures to which the Deputy refers are generally followed by the VEC in cases where a teaching appointment is being made with a view initially to assigning the new appointee to a community college. Existing permanent wholetime teachers are assigned and redeployed, as circumstances require, among the various schools under a committee's jurisdiction.
