Vol. 392 No. 3

Written Answers. - Senior Cycle Continuation Course.

124.

asked the Minister for Education the reason her Department do not provide a continuation course at senior cycle level for students who have taken mathematics at the lower "C" level at junior cycle.

Mathematics is an obligatory subject at junior cycle and in order to cater for the whole ability range three levels are available. Mathematics at senior cycle is not obligatory. After a five year study of mathematics a certain minimum standard is deemed necessary.

I have decided that two levels should continue to be on offer for the present, pending a study of the range and extent of proposed senior cycle curricular reform and the establishment of broad parameters in relation to this.

I have asked the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment to advise me on these issues.
