Vol. 392 No. 4

Written Answers. - Irish Steel.

27.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the reason the deal involving Irish Steel was not completed in September 1989; when the deal will be completed; if the Government is still satisfied that the proposal serves the interests of Irish Steel and its workforce; and if he will entertain other, and possibly better, offers.

The reason that the proposed sale of Irish Steel Ltd. was not completed in September was that the purchaser had not met a number of his contractual obligations at that time. The current closing date for completion of the deal is 30 November 1989. It will not be possible to offer a final judgment on the proposal until a number of outstanding aspects are clarified.

The question of entertaining other offers would arise only in the event of the proposed sale not proceeding.
