The following table sets out by grade the number of staff serving in the Probation and Welfare Service of my Department on 27 October, 1989, as compared with the authorised number which obtained immediately prior to 27 March 1987, the date the current staffing embargo was introduced.

The question of providing additional staff for the Probation and Welfare Service is at present the subject of consultation between my Department and the Department of Finance, which has overall responsibility for the control of staff numbers in the Civil Service.
