Vol. 392 No. 7

Written Answers. - Forest Development.

50.

asked the Minister for Energy if he has had any discussions with the Minister for the Environment regarding the need for consultation on environmental problems which might arise from forest development.

No discussions have taken place on the general matter of forestry development and the environment. There has, however, been direct consultation with the Minister for the Environment in relation to implementation of the EC Directive on Environmental Assessment which covers forestry development in certain circumstances. Furthermore, local authorities are consulted on such matters as grants for private afforestation and applications for tree felling licences under the Forestry Act, 1946.

I am, of course, concerned that forestry will develop in a way best suited to enhance the environment, and will continue to consult with the Minister for the Environment and local authorities as the need arises.
