Vol. 393 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Local Elections.

11.

asked the Minister for the Environment if the local elections will be held on their due date in June 1990; and if he will give an assurance that the Government will not attempt to postpone these elections.

Under the law local elections are due to be held in June 1990. The question of postponement has not been considered.

Will the Minister confirm, therefore, that the public statement made by the Minister for Energy that the local elections will go ahead in June 1990 constitutes Government policy and that a proposal will not be brought before this House for their postponement?

No, we have not considered the matter as it does not arise.

Will the Minister assure the House that no proposal will be brought before the House——

The Deputy has already put that question.

May I take it from the Minister's evasive answer that the Government are considering the postponement of the local elections?

It does not arise now. What is all the panic about?

We now come to Question No. 12. I wish to inform Deputy Currie that I was unable to call him as supplementaries on priority questions are confined to the Deputy who tabled the question. Otherwise I would have been glad to facilitate him.

Thank you. I am learning every day.
