Vol. 393 No. 1

Written Answers. - Native Irish Speakers.

260.

asked the Minister for Education the number of places in the competition for entry to the colleges of education that are reserved for native speakers of Irish; and if this number was expressed as an absolute or as a proportion of the total intake in any given year.

My Department's regulations in relation to the admission of school-leavers to Colleges of Education allow that up to ten per cent of places may be reserved for candidates from the Gaeltacht, i.e. candidates who reside in the officially designated Gaeltacht and the normal language of whose home is Irish. This is expressed as a proportion of the total intake in a given year.
