The above table excludes leavers from 5th and 6th standards whose destination is unknown. Between 1977/78 and 1984/85, national schools were asked to provide data on the destination of leavers from 5th and 6th standards only. Data in respect of leavers from 5th and 6th standards are not available in respect of the 1985/86-1987/88 academic years. With effect from the current academic year, national schools are being asked to provide data on the destination of leavers from all standards in the preceding school year. It will be some time, however, before data in respect of leavers from the 1988/89 school year are available.

The above percentages are derived from estimates of school leavers contained in the annual school leavers' survey conducted by the Department of Labour. The results of the survey are based on a national sample of a proportion of the total number of school leavers. For the purposes of the above table, it is taken that the number of school leavers returned in the school leavers' survey as having no qualification refers to those pupils who left post-primary school without sitting the group or intermediate certificate examinations.
