Vol. 393 No. 1

Written Answers. - Higher Education.

306.

asked the Minister for Education the current rate of participation in higher education in Ireland; and the equivalent rate for other EC countries.

The current rate of participation in full-time higher education in Ireland is 25 per cent of the age cohort. Because of the differences in the interpretation of higher education between different EC countries a direct comparison with levels of participation in other countries would be misleading. Between 1980 and 1986 the participation rate in higher education has increased from 20 per cent to 25 per cent of the age cohort.
