Vol. 393 No. 1

Written Answers. - Teaching of Foreign Languages.

317.

asked the Minister for Education if she expects the initiative to allow senior cycle students to complete the junior cycle course in French, German, Spanish and Italian to be a success, in view of the fact that no recognition is being given to it for points purposes; and if she has taken any steps to secure recognition of it for third level points or higher education grant purposes.

This particular initiative was not taken for third level points or higher education grant purposes. Its purpose was to respond to a perceived need to expand language take up at second level and to cater for senior pupils who may wish to begin the study of a language ab initio. In this regard I would refer the Deputy to my reply to a previous question taken on 26 October 1989.
