Vol. 393 No. 3

Written Answers. - Prison Illiteracy.

97.

asked the Minister for Justice the percentage of illiteracy among those in prison in the State.

While precise figures are not available in relation to illiteracy among prisoners, the experience of those involved in providing educational services to the prisons suggests that between one-quarter and one-third of prisoners have serious problems with reading and writing.
