Vol. 393 No. 8

Written Answers. - Third Level Education Costs.

189.

asked the Minister for Education the average cost of educating a student for a year in each of the third level education institutions in this country; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Because of the major differences in costs between courses within institutions an average cost for each institution would be misleading.

A unit cost study on a course basis for the institutions in the HEA sector is underway at present. A considerable amount of work on costs for third-level courses in the VEC sector has been completed as part of the work of a committee established to examine third-level courses which lead to awards by the NCEA and other bodies outside the universities and it is intended to extend this work to provide unit costs for the various departments of these colleges.
