Vol. 393 No. 8

Written Answers. - Tax Rebates.

75.

asked the Minister for Finance if a tax rebate will issue to a person (details supplied) in Dublin 12 who has supplied all of the information requested and who first applied for the refund in March 1988; the reason the person concerned was admonished by a tax official for contacting a Member of Dáil Éireann about this delay; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have been advised by the Revenue Commissioners that a review of the taxpayer's liability for 1987-88 has now been carried out and an overpayment of £530.85 has arisen. A cheque in settlement, representing all the tax deducted from her earnings in that year, will be issued to her within the next week.

The delay in reviewing the liability was caused by the fact that the taxpayer was unable to supply necessary evidence of pay and tax deducted in support of her claim. Her employer had since ceased to trade and after some difficulty the Revenue Commissioners traced the employer and he supplied the evidence required on 7 September 1989. Further information was required from the taxpayer and this was supplied in early November.

I have also been assured by the Revenue Commissioners that at no time was the taxpayer admonished by a tax official for contacting a Member of Dáil Éireann about the delay.

asked the Minister for Finance the reason for the delay in issuing a tax rebate to a person (details supplied) in Dublin 24, in view of the urgent financial need of the person concerned; if same will issue as a matter of urgency; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Revenue Commissioners have advised me that they are not satisfied that the taxpayer has made full and correct returns of his income from all sources. Until such time as such returns have been made, it is not possible to determine whether a repayment of tax is due to him.
