Vol. 393 No. 10

Written Answers. - World Food Programme.

48.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he will outline Ireland's official attitude to the world food programme; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

In next year's estimates the overall provision for official development aid is being increased by £900,000 to £35.5 million. However, owing to the need to restore order to the State's finances, it was necessary in 1988 to reduce the allocation in the Estimates for the World Food Programme to a token provision of £1,000. I hope that as the Governments finances improve, it may be possible, before too long, to restore the substantive provision.

My Department continues to provide food aid under the Food Aid Convention and £360,000 has been allocated for this purpose in 1990.
