Committee of Selection: Fourth Report.

The Committee of Selection reports that it has nominated the following Members to serve on the Joint Services Committee:

Deputies John Browne, Bill Cotter, Mary Coughlan, Noel Davern, Joe Doyle, Mary Flaherty, Colm Hilliard, Ned O'Keeffe and Ruairí Quinn,

that it has nominated the following Members to serve on the Joint Committee on the Irish Language:

Deputies David Andrews, Mary Coughlan, Michael Finnucane, Liam Fitzgerald, Dinny McGinley, Michael Martin and Brian O'Shea,

that it has nominated the following Members to serve on the Joint Committee on the Secondary Legislation of the European Communities:

Deputies Seán Barrett, Peter Barry, Ben Briscoe, Bernard Durkan, John Ellis, Michael Ferris, Dermot Fitzpatrick, Eamon Gilmore, Michael D. Higgins, Philip Hogan, Pádraic McCormack, Tom McEllistrim, M. J. Nolan, John O'Donoghue, Ned O'Keeffe, John O'Leary, Nora Owen and Máirín Quill,

that it has nominated the following Members to serve on the Joint Committee on Commercial State-Sponsored Bodies:

Deputies Dermot Ahern, Richard Bruton, Brian Hillery, Joe Jacob, Liam Kavanagh, Paul McGrath and Dick Roche,

and that it has nominated the following Members to serve on the Joint Committee on Women's Rights:

Deputies David Andrews, Monica Barnes, Paul Bradford, Síle de Valera, Nuala Fennell, Charles Flanagan, Tom Kitt, James McDaid, Dick Spring, Dan Wallace and Mary Wallace.

I move: "That the report be laid before the Dáil."

Is that agreed?

No, it is not agreed. As indicated on the Order of Business, The Workers' Party seek to register their strongest protest in the House at the fact that of the five committees being constituted The Workers' Party are being excluded from four of them, despite our strenuous requests and representations at Whips' meetings and with the Chief Whip.

I am sorry Deputy, but it has already been decided that this matter will be taken without debate.

You keep changing the rules, a Cheann Comhairle.

I am simply seeking to register our protest, that we have been arbitrarily excluded from four of these committees. We want to work in this House and it is completely objectionable that the major parties are not prepared to allow us contribute.
