Vol. 394 No. 4

Written Answers. - Repairs of Grand Canal.

97.

asked the Minister for Finance the repairs, if any, which were carried out by the Office of Public Works along the banks of the Grand Canal at Pullough, Tullamore, County Offaly; the cost of the works undertaken; the nature of such works; the number of men involved in the work; the reason for the carrying out of this work; the reason work was carried out on this side of the roadway in view of the fact that there are no people living on this side of the road; and the reason work was not carried out on the roadway along the canal on which people live.

The repairs carried out recently by the Office of Public Works along the banks of the Grand Canal at Pullough, Tullamore, were remedial works required following the discovery of a leak from the canal in that area. The cost of the works was of the order of £2,500. They consisted of the excavation and claying of the section of embankment concerned and consequential reinstatement of the roadway which had been adversely affected by the works. Three men were involved directly in the work with appropriate supervision. The question of the maintenance of the second roadway referred to by the Deputy and of other canalside roadways in County Offaly is being investigated jointly by the Office of Public Works and the local authority and it is hoped that a satisfactory solution to the problem will be reached shortly.
