Vol. 394 No. 6

Written Answers. - Tenant Purchase Scheme.

121.

asked the Minister for the Environment, in view of the long delays being encountered by thousands of local authority tenants who applied to purchase their houses under the 1988 tenant purchase scheme, if he will amend the scheme so that the rent paid between the date of application and the actual date of becoming tenant purchaser will be credited against the purchase price of the house; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

122.

asked the Minister for the Environment, in view of the long delays in processing thousands of applications for tenants purchase under the 1988 tenant purchase scheme issued by his Department, whether, in the case of houses where the staff processing of the purchase application has been delayed by staff shortages for more than six months he will issue the condition inserted by his Department that no further maintenance on local authority houses be done from the date of purchase application; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 121 and 122 together.

The 1988 tenant purchase scheme does not include the condition referred to by the Deputy. The administration of this scheme, which has no provision for crediting rents towards purchase payments, is a matter for individual housing authorities. There are no proposals to amend the terms of the scheme at this stage. Authorities have been requested to complete their sales as quickly as possible.
