Vol. 394 No. 6

Written Answers. - Improved Academic Results.

139.

asked the Minister for Education if any system exists for reporting to her on the results achieved in terms of improved reading, writing and mathematical achievement scores as a result of the appointment of a remedial teacher to a school; and if a baseline in regard to these matters is established in a school prior to the making of such appointments.

Every primary school with a remedial teacher is required to keep detailed records of the number of pupils receiving remedial instruction and of the progress made by each child. These records are open to examination by the Department's inspectorate. The progress made is measured using a baseline of the educational attainment of the pupil before he/she obtains remedial attention.

In connection with the appointment of remedial teachers to post-primary schools consideration is given by my Department to detailed information from the schools on levels of achievement of pupils in basic skill areas as well as to other factors such as the socio-economic circumstances of the population served. Schools keep records of pupils' progress.

Such records are available to members of my Department's inspectorate who would take account also of factors such as adjustment to school, as well as motivation and attitudes of pupils, in forming an opinion as to the extent of the provision of remedial education required in any particular school.
