Vol. 394 No. 6

Written Answers. - Integration of Handicapped Persons.

162.

asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the fact that, as a result of the 1971 Act concerning the educational integration of the handicapped, half of all Italian schools take handicapped pupils; and if she favours a similar approach in this country.

It is my policy to favour the integration of handicapped pupils in ordinary schools so far as this is feasible.

The integration of handicapped pupils has resource and organisational implications and is not suitable in all cases.

The educational provision for handicapped pupils is one of the matters which the Review Body on Primary Education has been asked to consider. The matter will be further studied when the report of the review body is available early next year.
