Vol. 394 No. 6

Written Answers. - Third-Level Education Entry Criteria.

167.

asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the fact that in the State of Queensland, Australia, results in tertiary entrance subjects are based entirely on school assessment with a State-wide monitoring and review system; and if she will ask the Higher Education Authority and the Irish third level institutions to examine the merits of such a system for Ireland from the point of view of the social mix, academic ability and breadth of skills of third level entrants.

The entry requirements for third-level institutions generally and the specific requirements for particular courses are matters for the appropriate authorities in the institutions.

In general, the order of selection of students for entry to third level is determined by reference to leaving certificate results, matriculation examination results and combinations of the results obtained in both examinations.

In regard to the question of school-based assessment in the State certificate examinations, I have already informed the Deputy that this is a matter to be considered in conjunction with recommendations from the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment.
