Vol. 394 No. 6

Written Answers. - Galway City Sewerage Scheme.

39.

asked the Minister for the Environment, following the decision of Galway Corporation to recommend secondary treatment works for the proposed new Galway city sewerage scheme and following the publication of the environmental impact study, if he has made a decision to sanction the proposed scheme.

110.

asked the Minister for the Environment when he intends to meet deputations from Galway Corporation and the Clean Galway Bay Group concerning the funding of a secondary sewage treatment facility.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 39 and 110 together.

The preliminary report for the Galway city sewerage scheme, as submitted to my Department by Galway Corporation, does not provide for secondary treatment of effluent from the outset. A resolution adopted by the members of Galway Corporation requesting that the proposed design of the scheme be revised to include secondary treatment has subsequently been notified to my Department. The environmental impact study for the scheme is being examined at present and a final decision in relation to the level of treatment to be provided must await an assessment of the findings of this study.

The need for any meetings with deputations to discuss these matters will be considered on completion of the examination of the environmental impact study.
