Vol. 394 No. 6

Written Answers. - County Cavan Road Funding.

42.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will meet a deputation from Cavan County Council to discuss the problem of county road funding; when the meeting will take place; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

On 14 November 1989 I received a request from Cavan County Council for the reception of a deputation to discuss the question of road grants for county and regional roads.

On 23 November I notified county councils generally of their discretionary grants for regional and county roads for 1990. In the case of the Cavan County Council, these grants total £2.4 million, including a supplementary grant of £500,000 for improvement works, in recognition of the special needs of the county. The 1990 grant represents an increase of £872,000, or 57 per cent, compared with the equivalent grants to the local authority in 1989 and is almost four times the level of equivalent grants paid to the authority in 1985. I am satisfied that Cavan County Council have received their fair share of the funds available to me for regional and county roads in 1990.

As regards the reception of a deputation, I will be communicating with the council in due course.
