Vol. 394 No. 8

Written Answers. - Wyattville Road (County Dublin) Improvement Scheme.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

334 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for the Environment when he intends to give approval to Dún Laoghaire Corporation, County Dublin, for the Wyattville Road improvement scheme, for which contract documents have been submitted to his Department.

As the road in question is a non-national road, responsibility for undertaking any works on it, including the provision of the necessary finance, is a matter for the local authority. The local authority may, at its discretion, use the discretionary grant for improvement works provided annually by my Department to supplement expenditure from its own resources on such works.

In December 1989 contract documents for the Wyattville Road improvement scheme were submitted to my Department by Dún Laoghaire Corporation who requested a special road grant to meet the cost involved. Because of the competing demands for other important road schemes in the country, I do not propose to make special road grant assistance available to the local authority in this case. In these circumstances, the question of departmental approval to the contract documents does not arise.
