Vol. 394 No. 8

Written Answers. - County Laois New School.

Charles Flanagan

Question:

440 Mr. Flanagan asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the poor working conditions at the Christian Brothers' School, Portlaoise, County Laois; and if she will make a statement on the present position regarding the approval of the building of the new school.

The present position is that my Department is pursuing the possibility of rationalising post-primary facilities in Portlaoise. The need for rationalisation has been accepted by the managements of the Vocational and Christian Brothers' schools. I would hope that local agreement on the future provision of post-primary facilities in Portlaoise, on the basis of rationalisation measures, would be arrived at in the near future.

In the meantime, in view of building problems at the Christian Brothers' School, my Department approved the grant-aiding of essential repair-work and the upgrading of facilities at the school in November 1988.
