Vol. 395 No. 1

Written Answers. - Facilities for Physically Handicapped Children.

Michael D. Higgins

Question:

72 Mr. M. Higgins asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the deep distress being suffered by parents and children as a result of the lack of facilities in primary education for physically handicapped children; and if she has any proposals for the introduction of such facilities in the Galway city and county area.

I fully accept the need for the provision of suitable facilities for physically handicapped children in national schools. It is a long standing policy in my Department in designing new schools to provide for special toilet facilities for the disabled and suitable access to all parts of the building. In existing buildings where such facilities are sought by the school authorities grant aid is made available under the Rules for National Schools as well as any architectural advices required.

If the Deputy brings to my attention any instance where a school is experiencing difficulties I will arrange for the matter to be investigated and advise him of the outcome.
