Vol. 395 No. 3

Written Answers. - Defence Force Members Recourse to Moneylenders.

Mervyn Taylor

Question:

36 Mr. Taylor asked the Minister for Defence if his attention has been drawn to the fact that a number of moneylenders are actively involved in conducting business with members of the Defence Forces; if he is taking any steps to assist members of the Defence Forces in this situation; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The military authorities prohibit moneylenders from entering military posts. Furthermore, where it is suspected that unlicensed moneylenders are attempting to conduct business with members of the Defence Forces the matter is brought to the notice of the Garda.

The military authorities have taken many measures, including educational talks to military personnel and the provision of their own credit arrangements, to counteract the activities of moneylenders.
