Vol. 395 No. 4

Written Answers. - Reformulation of EC Policy.

John Bruton

Question:

18 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he agrees with the conclusion of the NESC Report on Ireland in the European Community (details supplied) to the effect that Ireland should devise a positive strategy for the reformulation of EC Policy, which would be more suitable to our needs; if so, the action he proposes to take in the matter; and when he will make definite proposals to his European colleagues on the subject.

The Government has welcomed report No. 88 of the National Economic and Social Council on Ireland in the European Community: Performance, Prospects and Strategy. We agree with its basic thrust.

The report is being studied and has been brought to the attention of the Commission and of the other member states. The recommendations of the report, including those referred to by the Deputy, will inform the evolution of Ireland's strategic approach to Community policies and the negotiations on the development of those policies.
