Vol. 395 No. 4

Written Answers. - Baltic Republic Developments.

Michael Ferris

Question:

52 Mr. Ferris asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he has received any representations from the representatives of the Baltic States of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia in relation to the democratic developments which are occurring in those Republics; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have not received representations on the developments in the three Baltic Republics, other than letters from members of the public both here and abroad. I am following events in the Baltic Republics with close and sympathetic attention. I welcome those developments which indicate that the Republics are moving towards a greater degree of political pluralism and are engaging in forward-looking economic reforms. In this regard, I note that they have achieved a considerable degree of economic autonomy.
