Vol. 395 No. 6

Written Answers. - Use of Food Additive.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

179 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Health if he will ban the use of E127 as a food additive having regard to the evidence that it has carcinogenic effects and the recent decision by the United States to ban E127.

The question of the safety in use of the food additive E127 (Erythrosine BS) is currently being examined by the Food Safety Advisory Committee, which is the expert advisory body on all aspects of food safety. In the event of that body not being satisfied with the current controls, I will take whatever action is considered necessary to ensure public health and safety.
