Vol. 395 No. 6

Written Answers. - Examinations Through Irish.

John Bruton

Question:

208 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Education the proportion of certificate examination students who obtained a 10 per cent bonus for taking subjects through Irish in (a) 1960, (b) 1970, (c) 1980 and (d) 1989.

The records relating to 1960, 1970 and 1980 are not available in my Department.

The precise details in relation to bonus marks awarded to candidates at the 1989 certificate examination have not been prepared in my Department and it would take an inordinate amount of official time to provide the information.

From 1990 onwards, as a result of further development of the examinations computer system, it will be possible to extract details of the number of candidates taking the various subjects through Irish as soon as the scripts are returned to, and opened in, the Examinations Branch. It is likely to be a number of years before the full break-down of marks by question and bonus is entered on the system and until then the only way by which the precise details in relation to bonus marks can be extracted is manually.
