Vol. 395 No. 6

Written Answers. - Staple Foodstuffs Prices.

Colm M. Hilliard

Question:

82 Mr. Hilliard asked the Minister for Finance if he will give examples of the recommended retail price of some staple foodstuffs as a result of the reductions in VAT in the 1990 budget.

Most foodstuffs, particularly staple foods such as meat, fish, dairy products, vegetables, bread, cereals etc., are zero rated for VAT purposes and accordingly are not affected by the reduction from 25 to 23 per cent in the standard rate announced in the budget. The reduction gives scope, however, for price cuts of 1.6 per cent in the wide range of other goods and services affected by the change.
