112 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he has any proposals to site a pig killing and processing plant in Castlebar, County Mayo, in view of the closures of both Castlebar and Claremorris bacon factories; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
The question of setting up a pig killing and processing plant is a matter for private commercial interests. I should point out however, that under the Government's programme for rationalisation and modernisation of the pigmeat industry, which is currently under way, my Department could only consider supporting non-slaughtering, export oriented, processing projects.
