29 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the total value of Irish imports/exports to/from each of the former Communist bloc countries of Eastern Europe in each of the past five years; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
I propose to circulate in the Official Report a tabular statement giving details of the total trade between Ireland and the countries of Central and Eastern Europe and the USSR as produced by the Central Statistics Office. This statement shows that total trade has remained relatively static over the period, at about IR£200 million per annum, and indicates that Ireland has a deficit, which is also static, at about IR£50 million per annum. A notable element in this trade is that about one quarter of all trade is represented by imports of coal from Poland.
