Vol. 395 No. 9

Written Answers. - Management Development and Training.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

61 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Labour if he has any plans to increase the resources available for management development and training in Ireland in 1990; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The responsibility for management development rests with business. The State assists in a number of ways including the Exchequer subvention to the IMI and IPA and increasingly, to the third level education system.

In their report to me, the advisory committee on management training which I appointed in July, 1987, recommended that the existing system of State support for management development be restructured and targeted at small businesses which draw up proper management development programmes. The committee also recommended that State financial support should be redirected from providers of management training services to users of the services.

I have had extensive consultations with relevant interests concerning the committee's report and I expect to submit proposals on State supports for management development to the Government shortly.
