Vol. 396 No. 1

Written Answers. - Leaving Certificate Examinations.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

128 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Education if she will outline the duties of attendants and doorkeepers at leaving certificate examinations; the number of hours they are required to be in attendance on each day that examinations take place; and the rate of payment per hour or per day.

The attendant is required to assist the superintendent in the preparation of the examination centre on the day preceding the commencement of the examinations.

On the days on which examinations are scheduled to take place in the centre to which he/she is assigned, the attendant must be in attendance at least half an hour before the commencement of the first examination and remain for the period of the examinations each day; take up a suitable position outside the centre to control access thereto; remain in position during the period of the examinations except when requested by the superintendent to summon a member of the school authority or to accompany a candidate who has been given permission to leave the centre temporarily; ensure, as far as possible, that no disturbance occurs outside the centre which would distract the candidates from their work; not be in the centre during the period of the examinations or during the distribution of the question papers; not assist in the distribution of question papers or stationery; not engage in any activity which would interfere with the proper discharge of his/her duties and subject to the above, comply with all relevant instructions issued by the superintendent for the maintenance of the security and integrity of the examinations.
The fee payable to attendants in 1989 was £5.70 per day.
