Vol. 396 No. 3

Written Answers. - County Laois School.

Charles Flanagan

Question:

232 Mr. Flanagan asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the proposed relocation of moderately handicapped children from St. Francis' special school, Portlaoise, County Laois; and if she will make a statement on the future plans of her Department regarding the provision of alternative and suitable accommodation for these children.

My Department have written to the chairman of the board of management of St. Francis' school with a request that arrangements be made as soon as possible for the transfer of the class of moderately mentally handicapped pupils to the main St. Francis' school building in good time before the 31 March next by which time the Kolbe Centre has to be vacated. The Department consider the educational welfare of the pupils concerned would be best served by accommodating them in their own school premises where adequate accommodation and excellent facilities are available.
