Vol. 396 No. 3

Written Answers. - Complaints to Garda Complaints Board.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

40 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Justice when the Garda Síochána Complaints Board will process complaints received since August, 1989; and the number of such complaints received to date.

I am informed by the Garda Síochána Complaints Board that 420 complaints have been received since 11 August 1989. Of these, 35 which were capable of being disposed of readily, have so far been dealt with by the board. The board have also informed me that, while it is difficult to be precise about the matter, they expect to be in a position by November of this year to commence dealing with the balance of complaints received after 11 August 1989, which cannot be summarily disposed of.

I might add that the staff complement of the board has been increased from six to ten.
