Question:78 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Justice the number of gardaí promoted to the rank of sergeant in the last 12 months; the number likely to be promoted in the next 12 months; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The number of gardaí promoted to the rank of sergeant in the past 12 months is 102.
A minimum of 88 gardaí will be promoted to sergeant rank in the next 12 months as part of the package of measures which I announced last November. Further promotions will be made to the rank on the basis of vacancies which arise, but it is not possible at present to state the number that may be involved.
