Vol. 396 No. 4

Written Answers. - Army Pension.

Michael Noonan

Question:

76 Mr. Noonan (Limerick East) asked the Minister for Defence the pension(s) being paid by his Department to a former members of the Army (details supplied); the basis on which the pensions were calculated; if it is the intention of his Department to vary in any respect the amounts of the awards; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The person in question is in receipt of a disability pension under the Army Pensions Acts based on a degree of disablement of 45 per cent. The current rate of pension in his case is £2,592 a year. He also received lump sum compensation of £40,000 in respect of one of his pensionable disablements in settlement of a civil action.

The Army Pensions Acts provide that where compensation is received after the award of a disability pension, the award may be reviewed and, having regard to the amount of compensation received, the pension may be either terminated or reduced. Under those provisions, a review of the pension being paid to the person in question is in progress in my Department and will be concluded in the near future.
