Question:

67 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport if the Government are prepared to give financial support to the proposed airport on Roundstone Bog, County Galway; and if he will recommend allocation of Structural Funds for the airport.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 23, 26, 66 and 67 together.

I have received representations in relation to the proposed airport project at Roundstone Bog, Clifden, County Galway. However, I have not received any formal application from the promoters for financial support for the project.

My Department's rôle in relation to the development of private airports is confined to the grant of operating licences where appropriate and assessment of the commercial prospects for projects where applications are being made for financial assistance from the Exchequer or from EC Structural Funds. I have initiated a study on the guidelines to be applied in future to the location of new regional and local airports in the interest of developing a comprehensive approach in this area, taking account of existing facilities.

There are no funds in my Department's 1990 Estimate which would enable payment of Exchequer capital grants to be made to this airport.

With regard to EC Structural Funds for airport development, negotiations are taking place with the European Commission on the criteria and specific measures for EC funding of such developments in Ireland. When these have been agreed they will be included in the operational programme for roads and other transport infrastructure which will be laid before the House and published.
